All Eyes On Him: Tom Ford. Fashion Designer & Film maker.

Devastatingly handsome and extraordinarily talented, December’s man crush focuses on someone who could arguably be described as the most influential designer of the last decade. Tom Ford is quite possibly one of the few people in the world who would cause me to go mute- in his recent interview in The Sunday Time’s Style Magazine (conducted naked) even AA Gill seemed unnerved.

Mr Ford’s love for fashion was triggered as an intern in Paris for Chloe. Starting as a designer and later becoming Creative Director, he revolutionised Gucci (which was then, would you believe it, a faltering luxury goods company) and then transferred his magic touch to YSL. After “artistic differences” caused him to part ways with the Gucci group, Tom Ford announced the creation of the TOM FORD brand in 2005. Last year Ford made his film directorial debut with the award-winning A Single Man, a movie about love and loss, which has a visual potency that still has me mesmerised.

Mr Ford previewed his label’s debut women’s collection in September- apart from Terry Richardson, all photographers were banned, and the images were only released this month. His argument to no photography was why should he showcase his designs months in advance so that the likes of H&M can copy the trends set by him?  This move has the potential to recreate that exclusivity within designer fashion that has been fading due to rapid factory reproduction of catwalk trends.

All Eyes will be on Tom Ford’s women’s collection when it launches next month. What a shame that window shopping will be the closest we get to a piece- in true Tom Ford style the super elegant luxe threads will not be coming cheap, with prices closer to couture than ready-to-wear.

This man’s quest for perfection and workaholic attitude absolutely captures me.

ALL EYES ON HER Tip: Harpers Bazaar has an exclusive interview with Tom Ford with pictures of the new collection in it’s January edition which came out on December 6th.
